The HTHS Class of 1973 Alumni Scholarship Fund

PURPOSE

The class of 1973 having a desire to give back to their Alma Mater has created a scholarship fund to assist a worthy senior student with financial assistance during their studies at a Jamaican Tertiary Institution.

APPLICATION DEADLINE

By the end of the second term of the school year (Easter Term)

ANNUAL AWARD: JA$150,000.00

The Holmwood Technical High School Class of 1973 Alumni Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance to a graduating student of Holmwood who plans to pursue a professional college degree. The scholar will receive a one-time award of JA$150,000.00. This award will be given to a different student each year. The award must be used to meet direct education expenses such as living accommodation, tuition and books.

 

ELIGIBILITY/REQUIREMENTS

This award is intended for students who have been accepted into a program of studies in Healthcare, Education, Agriculture or Social Work. Although not legally bonded, the awardee is expected to be someone who espouses a moral obligation to give back to the Jamaican Community by remaining and working in Jamaica for no less than one year after their studies are completed.

The applicant must also be a student who has been active in extracurricular activity at school such as sports, drama, cadet corps, choral group, Christian Fellowship or engaged in voluntary activity such as tutoring other students, played the piano/other instrument at devotions and other functions. A proven record of community activity such as in the church, community center and other civic areas will also be considered.

 

FUNDING

The Program is funded through personal contributions by Alumni Class of 1973 and by any fundraising events carried out by them. The class may also solicit/accept funds from businesses or individuals outside of the group who wish to make contributions but who will have no role in the decision-making process.

 

SELECTION COMMITTEE

Awardees of the Scholarship Fund will be selected by a Committee made up of five people; four (4) from the Holmwood Class of 1973 and/or its nominees along with the principal or his/her designate. The committee is the sole body charged with the responsibility of receiving all applications for consideration. Once the committee makes their decision it will be final and binding.

The committee encourages the awardee to become a member of the local chapter of the Holmwood Past Students Association through which it will contact him or her.

Advertisement will be posted during the first term of the final high school year, with the deadline for the completed application to be returned as stated above (see Annual Award). Applications will then be reviewed by the committee but the decision will remain pending until final exam results and acceptance letters become available in the Summer (June/July).

 

PROCESS FOR APPLICATION

The applicant will be required to submit the following documents:

• Completed Application Form
• Acceptance Letter from Tertiary Institution for studies in relevant programme
• Proof of graduation from Holmwood
• Two Character References (may be from a Teacher, Pastor, Community Leader, JP, member of the school board)
• Statement by Candidate (The candidate is required to explain how he/she considers his/her course of study to be relevant to the development of Jamaica (no more than 150 words). If necessary, use an additional sheet of paper and attach to the application.)

ANNOUNCEMENT OF AWARD:

The awardee will be informed by an emailed letter as well as an announcement in the various methods listed above (see postings/announcements).

 

PRESENTATION:

A cheque for the award will be presented in person by a member of the Class of 1973 at Holmwood during devotions in September of the year the awardee will be entering the tertiary institution as a freshman and a photograph taken at the presentation.
